From the Principal
Commonwealth legislation requires all independent schools to publish to families ‘school performance’ data on an annual basis. The objective of this initiative by the Commonwealth Government is to increase accountability and transparency of information published by schools so that families can make informed decisions when choosing or comparing schools. This is the final year for this model of
School Performance Report as we move into the next funding quadrennium and a new model commencing in 2009.
The data required to be published for the 2008 College year includes:
• Academic Results
• Student and Staff daily attendance
• Staff Professional Development and Qualifications
During 2008, growth in our Junior School brought an increase in classes at the Pre-Primary and Year 3 levels. Our Middle Years Program extended into Year 8, just as new facilities were being developed for Years 7 to 9 on the river side. NAPLAN testing revealed outstanding benchmark achievement in literacy and numeracy across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
Senior School students continued our fine tradition of outstanding TEE results and based on those results, MLC was ranked fifth school in the State.
On behalf of the College community, I would like to thank the MLC Teaching and Operational staff for their dedication and hard work, the College Council for its support and governance of the College and MLC parents for their supportive partnership in the education of their daughters.
MLC Rowing, which celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, is racing ahead into an exciting new era as the penultimate regatta at Champion Lakes foreshadowed this week. The clear, sunny day combined perfectly with the competition on the water to make it a stunning morning. The girls were quick to adjust to the new opportunities this course offers for spectator participation, with cheer squads now making an impact as crews approach the finishing line. Congratulations to all rowers, coaches and supporters! The Head of the River on Saturday 15 August will also be held at Champion Lakes.
The christening of Silver Jubilee, a gleaming new quad shell addition to MLC boats, symbolised and celebrated not only the longevity of MLC Rowing but also the dedication and commitment of our rowing families. It was fitting that their tireless efforts in fundraising for rowing, through manure drives, Entertainment Book sales, morning teas and the annual quiz night hosted by the Rowing Support Group have had such a tangible outcome with the purchase of this new quad shell for the MLC rowers. On behalf of the College, I extend sincere appreciation to Alan Stephenson and the Rowing Support Group for the fabulous Silver Jubilee.
Not to be outdone in the fundraising and friend raising stakes, the MLC Parents’ Association (PA) hosted two highly successful fundraising events; Big Purple Undies and The Masquerade Ball. Much frenzied bidding throughout the auction at the Ball generated loads of fun while assisting the PA to grow a sizeable donation to the MLC Foundation. Our thanks go to Helen Dalgleish, Rachel Akehurst and the Ball Committee members who were the drivers of these functions.
The 2009 College Production, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, transformed Hadley Hall into a spectacular celebration of talent and creativity in a fabulous, fantasy world. The audience was enthralled by the fun mix of ‘nonsense' characters which enabled girls to demonstrate their brilliant dramatic and musical skills. These skills were enhanced by the amazing costumes and set design of the calibre of Broadway or West End.
Congratulations to all students, staff and crew who were involved, including front of house, back stage and performers, in the stunning 2009 College Production!

Pandemic (H1N1) ‘Human Swine ‘Influenza
Information Update – August 2009
Schools are advised that pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza is now widespread in the general community throughout WA and has resulted in several deaths. The Department of Health has advised that people with influenza-like illness are not being routinely tested by health authorities.
The focus of prevention in schools is to reinforce the message that students and staff with influenza-like illness should stay away from school and from public places until their symptoms have abated. Sound health and hygiene practices are to be used in schools.
The following questions and answers have been developed and endorsed by the Department of Health to assist schools with specific issues.
Q. How can schools reinforce hygiene messages?
A. Schools can provide educational activities to promote healthy habits and reduce the spread of influenza. Students, parents and staff should be reminded that preventing spread of influenza primarily focuses on maintaining sound health and hygiene practices. Messages should include:
• Wash your hands frequently (alcohol based cleaners are useful if soap and water is not easily accessed), especially after coughing and sneezing.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and dispose of the tissue in a rubbish bin afterward.
• Avoid contact with people who are unwell.
• Ask your doctor about getting the seasonal influenza vaccination, which will help protect you against seasonal influenza, especially if you belong to one of the groups for whom the vaccine is provided free (all adults aged 65 years and over, Aboriginal people aged 50 years and over, Aboriginal people aged 15-49 years with underlying medical conditions, children aged six months to four years) or is recommended (all persons six months of age and above with underlying medical conditions). Note that the seasonal influenza vaccine will not protect against the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza virus.
Q. Will the Department of Health advise principals if a student or staff member is confirmed or suspected of having pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza?
A. No. Schools will not be notified of individual cases because there is no public health action required for identified cases. Principals should continue to encourage staff, students, and teachers to self monitor for illness, and stay away from school if sick.
Q. Are people with pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza being placed in enforced isolation by the Department of Health?
A. No. Enforceable measures including quarantine and isolation are no longer being used by the Department of Health to control pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza in the community. However, it is important for unwell people to ‘self-isolate’ and stay home until fully recovered, in order to reduce transmission in the school environment.
Q. Where their parent has confirmed pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza or influenza-like illness, should well students stay home?
A. No. However, the child should be closely monitored for illness, and stay away from school if illness develops.
Q. Where a student has confirmed pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza or influenza-like illness should well siblings stay home?
A. No. However, the sibling(s) should be closely monitored for illness, and stay away from school if illness develops.
Q. If a child or staff member is confirmed as having pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza or influenza-like illness, for how many days should they absent themselves from school?
A. Regardless of whether or not influenza infection is confirmed, a child or staff member who becomes ill with an influenza-like illness should stay at home until fever and acute illness symptoms have completely resolved, or seven days from the date of onset of symptoms, whichever is longer. If antiviral medicine was given early in the illness, and the child or staff member are well after three completed days of treatment, they may return to school.
Q. Where can students, parents and staff members go for medical advice?
More information is available from the Department of Health website or call the National Human Swine Influenza Hotline on 180 2007. Health Direct can also be contacted on 1800 022 222 if you require medical advice.

After-school Mathematics for able and gifted students
Edith Cowan University (ECU) offers an excellent after school program for Mathematically Able and Gifted students.
The year-long ECU Mathematics Problem Solving program is a continuation of the ones that have proved so popular over the past seventeen years. More than 200 students from years 5 to 10, regularly attend the after-school classes at the Mount Lawley campus, for the opportunity to tackle challenging mathematical problems, and to extend their range of problem-solving skills and strategies. It also develops their skills in presenting solutions.
In 2010 there will be classes at five levels:
Primary Level 1: For students in Year 6 (Fortnightly: Thursday)
Primary Level 2: For students in Year 7 (Fortnightly: Thursday)
Secondary Level 1 (Euler): For students in Year 8 (Weekly: Tuesday)
Secondary Level 2 (Gauss): For students in Year 9 (Weekly: Wednesday – 5pm)
Secondary Level 3 (Noether): For students in Year 10 (Weekly: Wednesday – 4pm)
Students in the secondary level classes participate in Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians, a national program organised by the Australian Mathematics Trust.
There will be a charge of $100 for the year-long program. There is an additional charge of $75 for students in Years 8 to 10, for participation in the Mathematics Challenge program.
All of the above details, sample problems and further information are given on the website.
To enrol, students must work the sample problems, on their own and in their own time, and submit them to ECU (address given on the website) by 25 September, 2009.
The solutions should clearly state the student’s name, address, home telephone number, current school and current year-level.

Stress Down Day
This year, MLC participated in a Stress Down Day on Friday 31 July to raise money for Lifeline. Staff were encouraged to wear bright, cheerful and comfy slippers to work for a gold conation, to participate in the 'best de-stress idea' competition and attend de-stressful morning teas organised by the HR Department. Students were able to wear their sports uniform for the day.
The day was a great success, not only raising $750 for Lifeline, but increasing awareness of stress within organisational, school and personal lives.Thank you for your support.

Percussion Workshop
On Thursday 23 July, master percussionist Greg Sheehan attended the College for a workshop with the percussion students. The workshop began with an introduction to a number of interesting percussion instruments and the techniques used to play them. Some of these instruments even included an array of squeaky toys and a stainless steel bowl full of water. Hand percussion instruments were then used by the students to play a number of rhythmic exercises. Lastly, lots of bigger percussion instruments were used in an exercise exploring rhythm and how simple it can be using accented beats to create intriguing rhythmic patterns. Greg Sheehan with the aid of percussionist Steve Richter, taught the girls fascinating techniques with rhythm and gave them a deeper insight into the exciting world of percussion.

Mathematics Talent Quest Success
For the past four years, the Junior School has participated in the State Mathematics Talent Quest in which the girls are given an open-ended mathematics investigation to research and then present their findings in an interesting and informative way.
I am proud to announce the following results:
The Year 2 class investigated on ‘Playing Around with 3D Shapes’ received a highly commended grading. The girls investigated three dimensional shapes looking specifically at the attributes of shapes and which shape was the most effective to use in certain situations. I would like to congratulate the girls on their success and thank Ms Rose and Mrs Hu for their incredible working in creating the PowerPoint and movie presentation. The girls’ presentation will be on show on Thursday 20 October at our ‘My Learning Community’ day.
The Year 6 girls were split into mixed-ability teams with representatives from all three Year 6 classes. The girls were given five Platonic solids ranging from a cube to a dodecahedron. They were then asked to colour the faces so that no two faces which met along an edge had the same colour. The girls has to the find the least number of colours for this to be possible for each of the five regular polyhedra, and explain how to achieve it.
Audrey Yeo, Caitlin Gava, Tamsin Mahalingham and Maddie Brown received 2nd Place award and Katherine Liu, Caris McClements and Annie Sommer 1st Place. The girls have been asked to attend the award ceremony on Friday 7 August at Edith Cowan University. We are hoping the girls’ project will be selected to be presented at the National Finals.
I am certainly extremely proud of the girls’ achievements, but would also like to thank Mrs Franz, Mrs Jones, Mr Scott, Mrs Channey and Mrs Hardwicke in supporting and encouraging the girls during the investigation.
‘My Learning Community’
Thursday 20 August
I know in our busy schedules that we require advanced notice of important upcoming events; this is particularly true of working parents. Just last night I felt the frustration flowing through the veins when we received a note from my son’s school informing me that we had a parent conference scheduled for the next day! My wife and I had less than 24 hours’ notice! For the last two weeks, I have been mentioning about the ‘My Learning Community’ event on Thursday 20 August.
This event is one you and your daughter will not want to miss. It is a day when you’ll be able to review all your daughter’s learning, whether it’s in Music, Art or Language and Mathematics. We are hoping the choirs, orchestras and bands will be performing. Also, we will be holding our annual ‘Fun Run’. I am currently putting together the final schedule of events and will soon send home a detailed itinerary for the day during which I would like to celebrate the girls’ learning journey.

House Athletics Carnival
On Friday 24 July, Week 1 of Term 3, the Annual House Athletics Carnival was held at the very exciting and new State Athletics Stadium. As rain pelted down throughout the week, all eyes were on the weather-man praying for a fine day. Not even a chilly 4 degree morning could dampen the enthusiasm of early arrivals, as the sky was blue, no clouds in sight nor a breath of wind. We were in for a good day.
House prefects lead their chargers on a march around the new track in style and colour befitting of a ‘Carnivale’. The scene was set for a day of colourful fun, friendly competition and House spirit.
All participants in all events competed fairly and with great competitive spirit throughout the course of the day. Whether in A division or F division, in the 100m, novelty event, throwing or jumping, all girls demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship.
Congratulations to all House winners in their Year groups and individual podium winners. Once again Corinth were the conquerors for the third year running; a mighty effort!
Many thanks to parents who attended on the day to support their daughters, and to staff members who were involved in duties on and off the track.
Best Wishes and good luck to all girls training for selection in the Interschool Athletics Team co-ordinated by Mr Giles and Miss Douthie.

Lost Property
Lost property continues to be an area of concern and frustration for MLC students, families and staff. With the variable weather at this time of the year, we are experiencing an enormous volume of lost clothing as girls remove items of clothing as they warm up and leave them unattended.
Lost clothing will generally follow a number of pathways, depending on where it was lost, whether it is labelled or other factors outside of our control. Students whose clothing is clearly labelled are more likely to receive their returned clothing quickly.
When the clothing is labelled it will be returned to students by the following methods, returned directly to students, placed as a daily notice for collection from Student Services or given to tutors (in their pigeon holes) to return to the girls.
When an item is lost on the ovals, the courts or in Bosisto Hall, they will be deposited in the large box outside the Physical Education office, as this is first point of collection. The contents of this box are generally delivered to Student Services weekly.
If the clothing is not labelled, it will be placed on the lost property shelves adjacent to Student Services and advertised in the daily bulletin.
Unlabelled clothing lost in the Middle School will be held at Middle School reception for a short time before going to Student Services.
Unfortunately this year, a number of students with clearly labelled clothing items have lost them school, and these items have not re-emerged, as they should have. I ask that you inspect all items in the next wash cycle in case your daughter has inadvertently picked up another student’s clothing. If this occurs, please return them to Student Services as soon as possible.
At school, girls who have lost items are encouraged to retrace their steps to try to find them, check the collection points in Bosisto Hall, Middle School reception or Student Services, and to use the daily bulletin to increase the chances of it being returned. Currently, we have more than 50 unlabelled items awaiting their owners to collect them from the foyer adjacent to Student Services.

Free InDesign Training
Science teacher, author and publisher Ray Forma is providing training to interested students and staff in the creative Adobe layout software, InDesign.
InDesign is a sophisticated, but uncomplicated document layout application. The College has a site licence, so you can have this program installed on whatever College computer you use. Just contact the Technical Support Desk to make this happen
Why use InDesign when I can use MS Word or Publisher?
• Easier layout and interaction between text and graphics.
• Accepts many more formats for graphics than does Word or Publisher.
• Imports Word documents easily.
• Output direct to pdf as one of several output options.
• Easier importing and formatting of text.
• Easier importing and formatting of graphics.
• Easy manipulation of both graphics and text.
• Lots more bells and whistles, but only if you want to delve deeper.
• Professional rather than amateur.
Most current magazines, posters, pamphlets and books are the products of InDesign, so develop saleable professional techniques while having fun creating your own superior documents.
In our first session you will get some idea of InDesign's basic capabilities and operation. In subsequent sessions tell us what you need to do and we will help you discover how to do it.
Training sessions will be held after school on Wednesday 26 August (Session 1) and Wednesday 2 September (Session 2) from 3.45 till 5pm. Both sessions will be held in SC2.11. Please sign up at Student Services.

Swine Flu Update
We are beginning to experience signs of ‘Term 3 Flu Season’ and the Health authorities have advised that children with signs of respiratory illness (fever, coughs or runny nose) should not attend school. The essence of this message is Stay at home and do not go to work , school or social events until you are well. I urge you to take notice of such advice. It is hoped that the precautionary measures of voluntary exclusion we will avert the spread of the virus and keep people safe and well.
Please also reinforce the hygiene messages:
• Regular washing of hands, especially after coughing and sneezing
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the tissue in a rubbish bin.
• Thank you for your cooperation. Working together with these precautionary measures will assist us to prevent the spread of this virus.
For further information about flu generally, visit the Department of Health website at www.health.wa.gov.au
Prefect Election Process
The process for selection of the 2010 College Prefects commenced in Term 3.
Year 11 girls have been invited to complete a nomination form outlining their leadership qualities, previous relevant experience and involvement in school activities. A series of activities, designed to educate the student body about the desired qualities of our student leaders and the details of the voting process, will run through the election weeks. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and all staff members will be eligible to vote for College. All boarders will cast their votes vote for a Boarding House Prefect.
The process for electing College Prefects is the first of many different opportunities for current Year 11s to continue developing leadership qualities,. I have encouraged girls to think about the wide variety of situations that will present themselves over the coming 18 months, where the ability to motivate and inspire others to work towards achieving some shared vision or goal will be valued. I also remind girls that learning to manage disappointment that can occur when the outcome is not what we had hoped is a very important life skill that takes time and practice to master. We seek to develop resilience in our girls, the capacity to process one’s thoughts and emotions, re-focus upon any positives and use what we have learned from the experience to move on to new opportunities. Thursday September 10 is Election Day and we appreciate the services of representatives of the
Electoral Commission who will act as scrutineers and process the data. Candidates will then wait until the end of the first week of the Term 3 holidays before they will be informed of the outcome of the ballot. Portfolios are allocated to Prefects-elect following an interview process.
College Production
It has been an exciting week with College Production Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, opening with the matinee for invited primary school students and senior citizens. Audiences have been impressed by the depth of talent and exciting performances by students from K – 12. Under the leadership of directors Jodee Lambert and Suzy Bayne, many staff and students have put the finishing touches to their performances, stage sets and props, makeup, costumes, lighting, publicity materials, ticket selling, supper arrangements and decoration of Hadley Hall Foyer. Congratulations to everyone involved.
IGSSA Athletics
IGSSA Athletics will be held at the State Athletics Stadium,
AK Reserve, on Tuesday 15 September. Girls from Years 7 and 8 will attend the carnival as spectators to cheer our 60 to 70 competitors. Transport arrangements for these girls will be as for the Inter House Athletics Carnival. We request that girls be dropped off at the Stadium car park, entrance from Stephenson Avenue link by 8.15am and are collected from this area by 3pm. Inter House Athletics
A big thankyou to all the competitors, spectators and staff who attended our Inter House Athletics Carnival. Attendance was at an all-time high and a great day was experienced by more than 700 staff, students and parents.
As with the use of any new venue, staff are reviewing the planning and practice of the day, and would welcome feedback from parents and students. Your responses can be emailed to gnorthey@mlc.wa.edu.au. Our aim is to improve on the event, within the constraint imposed by using an external venue and having the weather ‘on tap’ at this time of year.
Year 11 Reports
Reports can bring mixed feelings to both students and parents. You have by now received the Year 11 Reports and have hopefully had time to reflect on the messages:
…. is always on task, ….. could apply herself more, …… needs to plan a thorough revision program, ……is a pleasure to teach, written by each subject teacher.
As you reflect and discuss progress with your daughter, her self-assessment whether written on their personal response reflection forms or orally, please take notice of their ideas and discuss their concerns as they are usually extremely honest and realistic. The next step is to assist them in making any necessary changes and now is the time to act on the information received. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued and staff are always willing to give their expertise to support your daughter. After school tutoring is available but it is your daughters’ responsibility to make the time and effort to attend. These sessions work best when the students come prepared with questions. If you have specific questions on any subject, please contact the subject teacher. The Head of Year or Assistant Head Senior School – Curriculum may be more appropriate for
general questions.

UWA revises ‘pre-requisites’ for students entering Engineering
From 2011, entry to UWA (2010 Year 12) the prerequisites for engineering courses (including combined degrees courses) will change*:
A scaled score of 50 or more in all units in one of the following sets will be required:
Set A: PHYS 3A/B and MAS 3C/D1
Set B: CHE 3A/B and PHY 3A/B and either MAT3C/D2 or MAS 3A/B2
Set C: CHE 3A/B and MAS 3C/D3
KEY
* Subject to final UWA approval.
1. Students who have not also passed CHE 3A/B may be required to take an additional Chemistry unit, depending on the type of engineering chosen.
2. Students will be required to take an additional mathematics unit.
3. Students will be required to take an additional physics unit.
Therefore, students completing MAS 3C/D will not require any additional mathematics units upon entering an engineering course at UWA.
In the words of the UWA admissions office: ‘a student who has completed a MAS unit set would be considered to have completed study at a level beyond that of MAT and so would be eligible for any course that specifies a MAT Mathematics unit set as a prerequisite’.

WA Science and Engineering summer school
Held in January, the School is for students about to start Years 11 and 12 (ie. current students in Years 10 and 11). It involves a physically and mentally challenging week-long program with a blend of hands-on sessions in chemistry, biotechnology, physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, renewable energy, environmental science and mineral science. There are also field trips, keynote lectures and demonstrations by Australia's leading scientists and science communicators, as well as recreational pursuits, starting each morning with a session at the beach.

Training sessions will be held after school on Thursday 27 August (Session 1) and Thursday 3 September (Session 2) Both sessions will be in SC2.11 from 3.45 to 4.45pm pm. Sign up at Student Services.
