Growth and renewal at MLC
This is a very exciting time for the College as we welcome our new Principal, Ms Rebecca Cody, to our community. Many activities over the next few weeks will symbolise the ‘growth and renewal’ that we foreshadowed back in February when Ms Cody's appointment was announced.
As we engage with this next phase of MLC's development, however, I want to ensure that we recognise also the exemplary way in which Ms Yvonne Palmer has carried the role of Acting Principal during the past six months. Our most sincere thanks are due to Ms Palmer and also to her whole leadership team (many of whom have also been in ‘acting’ roles) for their amazing work in ensuring that MLC's momentum for ‘striving for the highest’ has been sustained during this important period of transition from the past to the future. Thanks Yvonne, on behalf of us all!

MLC Netball Club Finals
Our netball season ended last weekend with eight of our 15 finals teams making the grand finals. The weather again played a part, especially in the earlier timeslot where the three Year 8 teams had to contend with their opponents and some nasty wind and rain. However to their credit, they all persevered and put up some wonderful displays of teamwork and sportsmanship. Though we did not win any of these earlier finals, all girls worked their hardest and should be as proud of themselves as we are of them.
At 1pm we had two teams competing and both worked really hard to win their games. That came true for the MLC Purple team under the wonderful leadership of its Collegian coach, Carmen Papaluca (’06). MLC Yellow (Year 9) worked with a lot of injuries but were inspiring to their supporters and step-in coach Brittany Whitehead (’08).
The Club’s greatest challenge was at 2.30pm when teams in Divisions 2, 4 and 6 all played simultaneously. Games were played under duress as opposing teams desperately wanted to win. These teams consisted of Year 10 and 11 players who trained and worked hard throughout the four-month long season. Ably led by Collegians Claire Robinson (’08) and Danielle Wright (’05), two teams tried until the last whistle to grab the lead. Our number 1 team, coached by Gayle Watson-Galbraith, had extremely tough competition. People watching this game were mesmerised with the quality of the game and the skill required to stay in contention. Throughout the game there was only one or two difference in the scores. The final result was 35-34 to MLC, which was fantastic result.
I would like to congratulate all teams for their efforts this season. We beat bad weather, rowing and music commitments, and illness to field teams each week. Our club members are wonderful at helping other teams out and for this I am very grateful. Gayle and I look forward to you all returning for the 2010 season.

Walk to Cure Diabetes
Year 4 student Rachel Gower is participating in Walk to Cure Diabetes, an event that raises money to fund vital research to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes, a chronic condition which affects over 140,000 Australians and millions of people, world-wide.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is not caused by diet or lifestyle, or through any fault of the sufferer. People don't grow out of it and there is no cure, yet. Even with the best care, a person with Type 1 diabetes risks developing long-term health complications. For example, diabetes:
• Is the number one cause of adult blindness
• Is the number one cause of amputations (not caused by an accident)
• Increases by five times the risk of stroke
• Causes over 40 per cent of cases of kidney failure
• Is the sixth leading cause of death in Australia
To sponsor Rachel’s walk, visit her personal website to make a donation - All donations are gratefully received and will help researchers find get closer to finding a cure.

From the Head of Senior School
To all Senior School Concerto Night performers …take a bow! Concerto Night 2009 was an amazing display of talent that provided top entertainment for the audience. Congratulations to Bobby Gallo, Andrea Carter, Catherine McRae conductors on the night and all Music staff and tutors who finessed the performances. We also acknowledge the big contributions by our support staff in the Music Department and across the College who contributed to making it such a fine evening of entertainment.
I am also happy to announce that Chorale Choir has been awarded the City of Joondalup Eisteddfod Mayors Cup as the most outstanding school choir at the Eisteddfod. Congratulations to all involved.

Well done to staff and students involved in last week’s IGSSA Athletics. There were some outstanding ‘Personal Bests’ achieved on the day and the team should be proud of its effort. We also acknowledge the big contribution made by our Physical Education department, particularly the Athletic coaches who contribute time and expertise to support the girls in their sporting endeavours.
Congratulations to the MLC Netballers who played in the finals. There were some very close encounters and the challenging conditions over the last three weekends certainly assured Netball as a winter sport. Our thanks go to the many coaches, coordinators and team supporters, and of course to our parents.
Year 12 girls are currently negotiating their final school exams. They will return to a busy program for the final two weeks of school leading up to their Graduation Service and Valedictory Dinner on Monday 26 October, after which they will be totally focused on their WACE Examinations or thinking about employment options leading into Christmas. I wish them all some well earned planned ‘time out’ over the two week break as they gear-up for completion of course programs and the challenges ahead.
The Prefect election process will conclude with interviews of the successful candidates to help decide on the allocation of Portfolios. Our thanks go to all 87 students who engaged in the process, which was a testament to the willingness and ability of the current Year 11 group to be student leaders. Prefect Elects will be announced at our first Assembly on 13 October, and handover will take place later in Term 4.
In Term 4, girls move back into summer uniform so please check to ensure all items are clearly labeled with your daughter’s name. We will invite girls to check the accumulated lost property and help diminish its size as Term 3 closes.
