From the Chair of Council
As I write this, I am overwhelmingly conscious of the many blessings that MLC and its students enjoy. We have all been part of an exceptionally joyful and upbeat start to Term 4, with a series of spectacular yet immensely personal events focused on welcoming Rebecca Cody and her family to MLC. It was a particular joy that some of Rebecca and Simon's friends and former colleagues from Woodford House were able to join us. The events of the past two weeks augur well for Council's strategic priority of 'building community'. On behalf of Council, I'd like to express heartfelt thanks to all involved in these events - whether as organisers, participants or supporters.
I am reminded also that today is World Teachers' Day and that, today above all days, it is timely for us to acknowledge the excellent staff we have at the College - both teaching and operational staff, and from the Principal through to our most junior members of staff. Each of these people is integral to the College's success and their work is much admired and appreciated.
We are determined that MLC will continue to achieve its vision of being "the school of choice for girls" and at the same time the school of choice for staff.
Professor Lesley Parker, Chair of Council
From the Principal
Commissioning and Inauguration Events
Thank you to all College families who were able to attend my Commissioning Service. I was so delighted to share such a moving occasion with you and representatives from Woodford House. The music was breathtaking, the symbols significant, and the buzz in the air simply palpable. I extend deep gratitude to the great number of people who contributed to the day’s success in a variety of ways.
This sentiment equally applies to the host of introductory functions I have attended which have enabled me to meet many special people within the College community. It has been a real joy to experience such a warm welcome. I offer particular congratulations to the Community Relations Office for their creativity, organisation and stamina!
The Arts at MLC
Last week showcased the skills and talents in our Creative Arts, Music and Theatre Arts departments with the eclectic exhibition; Semester 2 choral and instrumental concert; and the Middle School production. Congratulations to the teams who enabled the individual gifts of our girls to be fostered, and thank you to all staff and families who supported the events.
My personal pledge to the MLC community on 18 October referred to leading with imagination. The talented New Zealand artist Pierra McArthur explains that “… imagination points to endless ways of expressing any one given theme. Heart, eye and intellect are all involved.” We noted the evidence of this revealed in many ways through the work of our girls and their inspiring and committed teachers.
In formally declaring the Creative Arts exhibition eclectic open, I asked guests to ponder the significance of Yann Martel’s wisdom:
“If we, citizens, do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams.”
Year 12 Farewells
Although my journey with our 2009 Leavers has been brief, I sense wholeheartedly the depth of their contributions to College life and richness of their individual gifts.
I imagine that the past weeks have been full of mixed emotions for our Year 12s. There may have been a melting pot of feelings: possibly grief, anxiety and excitement. Despite the complexity of these sensations, as a College, we are confident that our relationship with the 2009 Leavers is not ending; it is simply transitioning as we begin to consider them among our many Collegians. Let us all embrace this change, knowing our young women are ready to go forth, to go well and to thrive.
At the girls’ Valedictory Dinner I expressed the following message of hope for not only the Class of 2009 but all who learn and grow at MLC:
“Leavers, as you journey, seek out the angels on this earth masquerading as people: may you know their strength and find love, faith and peace from within."
Per Ardua Ad Alta!
Rebecca Cody, Principal
Attention to Uniform
Teachers and Tutors will be working diligently to ensure girls wear the summer uniform correctly at all times, including when they are traveling between school and home. When girls are off campus, the hat is to be worn and the only outer garment permitted is the blazer. The summer dress must be knee-length.
Girls’ hair should be pulled back off the face and tied up with a ribbon, and no jewellery is permitted except a watch and plain earrings (studs or sleepers).
Heads of Year, Teachers and Tutors monitor the standard of uniform daily and we greatly appreciate the support of parents as we work together to ensure all students wear the uniform correctly and represent MLC with dignity.
At MLC, we will continue to emphasise the importance of our girls displaying pride in their personal appearance and their school through appropriate grooming and by correctly wearing the uniform.
Please assist by checking that all your daughters’ items of uniform are in excellent condition, including that her shoes are polished and undamaged, her dress fits, and that her hat is clean.
It is also important that uniform items are labelled with your daughter’s name – otherwise, at the end of each year we accumulate a large quantity of abandoned uniform items that cannot be returned to their owners.

School Blazer – if required
Bottle green cardigan –only to be worn on campus

Thanks to our donors
Thank you our community who have so generously contributed to the Partnering for their Future fundraising campaign.
In 2009 alone, we almost 150 community donors participated in the campaign – from current parents, staff and students to past parents and Collegians. To date, the Partnering for their Future campaign has raised more than $200,000 from individual, corporate and major gifts, and support group events and contributions. This overwhelming support of the Building and Scholarship programs will inspire other MLC community members to join the campaign to benefit our girls today.

Junior Years
From the Head of our Junior Years
Celebrating excellence
The standard of excellence achieved by girls in all areas is amazing. You only have to walk through the corridors of the Junior Years’ classrooms or visit the Art Studio to see the amazing works of art produced by our students.
The Semester 2 Music Concert was outstanding with girls from the Junior Years performing beautifully. I’ve also had the privilege of previewing some of the items for the Junior Years’ Concert and they are unbelievable. The Concert is scheduled for Friday 20 November ,
Furthermore, our girls showed tremendous sportsmanship and willingness to participate in friendly competition at this week’s Interschool Athletics Carnivals.
This week, I had the opportunity to witness Year 4 student Rachel Gower receive an award from Meerilinga in the category of ‘Caring for Myself and Others’ at a special award ceremony. Rachel was recognised for the way in which she has educated her peers about Type 1 diabetes and the independence she has displayed in her management of the condition.
Our Junior Years’ students are developing a greater social conscience and willingness to take action. Two Year 5 girls approached me about raising money for Snow Leopards this week. The girls had read about them on the internet and wanted to take positive action to support these endangered animals. Such demonstrations of initiative and global awareness are wonderful to observe as the Acting Head of the Junior Years.
At our first Junior Years’ Assembly of Term 4 we were able to truly celebrate academic excellence. In the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools category of English, one MLC student received a High Distinction, 18 girls attained a Distinction and 37 girls obtained a Credit. In Mathematics, a Year 6 student received a High Distinction, 18 girls attained Distinctions and 44 girls achieved a Credit. These are incredible results for the College and reflect the high standard of teaching within the Junior Years.
It was also my pleasure to announce at Assembly that Year 5 student Rebecca Whiting won an award from the Nedlands Library for the following poem she wrote:
A Day in the Life of Cottesloe Beach
Cool, crystalline water overwhelms me,
Streams of colourful fish glide swiftly by my side,
Bubbles fizz like lemonade,
Pale pink and white shells tinkle softly on the ocean floor,
Sand swirls around like a snow storm.
Turquoise blue waves nibble gently on the golden sand,
I swim into shore,
People on stand up paddle boards move slowly across the horizon,
Surfers come crashing into shore,
Kids play on the beach, building stunning sandcastles,
They are real castles with moats, dungeons and miniature orange starfish.
Hot, golden rays of sun shine on people’s faces,
Sticky ice cream trickles down their arms,
Tall, evergreen pines cast dark shadows on the lush grass.
As the day draws to a close,
A sensational sunset lights itself and dusk cascades over the beach.
People pack up to go home, ready for another day.
Rebecca Whiting, 11 years
We should all be truly proud of our girls’ achievements. Their results reflect the holistic education we offer in the Junior Years where we celebrate excellence in academic achievement, in addition to the arts, sports, music and other co-curricular pursuits.
Michael Brown, Acting Head of Junior years

Leeuwin Abrolhos Ocean Adventure
Exciting opportunities still exist for students to participate in the Leeuwin Abrolhos Ocean Adventure from 6 to 12 April, 2010. This tour is available to any student in Years 10, 11 or 12 next year who is aged 14 years or older by 5 April 2010. Students will sail STS Leeuwin, Australia's largest sail training tall ship, along the 'Shipwreck Coast' from Perth to the Abrolhos Islands which are home to the Batavia shipwreck. Upon reaching the Abrolhos Islands, students will be able to snorkel amongst pristine coral reefs and may have the opportunity to sail alongside the Batavia Longboat Replica ship.
The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation has been running a youth development program since 1986 and MLC has been running the school program since 1999. The program is both physically and emotionally challenging. It is designed to help young women reach their personal potential through the development of social confidence and relationship skills in the concept of self, communication skills, teamwork and a sense of community.
The benefits of the program directly impact the individual's peers, their school, family and community. These benefits are transferable as young people phase into adulthood as future employees and as responsible citizens in our communities.
Past students have said it was ‘the best trip they had while at MLC’ and remember it fondly in their final days of school.

Year 10 and 11 Maths - technology update
All Mathematics students in Years 11 and 10 use the Casio ClassPad as the main calculator. This device has an upgradable operating system and a new free Classpad OS Update is now available. Casio has released the latest OS for Classpad - version 3.04.
Apart from some basic bug-fixes, displayed values in tables and lists are now rounded rather than truncated - a big plus for the average student. There are many other enhancements including a significant upgrade to the statistics processing within the Spreadsheet application.
Visit the Casio Worldwide site and navigate to the downloads part of the site for your free upgrade installer. Remember that Classpads can only be upgraded using computers designed for Windows operating systems, not Macs.
