K-12
From the Principal
While a power outage caused darkness to descend on the campus last Friday, Middle and Senior School students and staff were blessed with a clear blue, cloudless sky over the new State Athletics Stadium at AK Reserve, where our annual Inter-House Athletics competition was held. Once the thin sheets of ice were scraped from surfaces in the early morning, the winter sunshine had us shedding our warm layers and looking for sunscreen lotion! What a stunning day it turned out to be. Congratulations are due to all PE/Sports staff, Heads of Houses and House Coordinators, Heads of School and all who took up timing/recording/supervising/equipment delivery and collection/injury fixing duties to support the safe running of the event. House spirit was on display from the opening moments of the traditional march past. The scene was set for a day of friendly, but nevertheless serious, competition from
which Corinth emerged the overall victors.
This Term, we welcome three new staff members: Natalie Arcus takes up her role in WSRC as Library Technician; Collegian Marilyn Bacich-Hearn returns to us as a part-time teacher of Japanese; and Neroli Wood will provide additional Counselling support during Term 3 while Sue Shaw completes her Acting Assistant Head of Senior School responsibilities. Returning from Long Service Leave are Margaret Calder and Lainie Gara, while staff who chaperoned trips and tours for MLC girls include Sally Newmarch, Dell Lussick and John Callie (Rowing European Tour), and Gary Howlett, Charlene Burnie, Burgess Orton and Kimberley McKerras (Exmouth Expedition). Our rowing crew was awarded a bronze medal at the Swiss National Championships and acquitted themselves admirably rowing against all-boy crews in another event! We appreciate the generous gift of time and support by these staff members to make
possible such exciting co-curricular options.
Congratulations go to the following students who were successful in the recent Speech and Drama Festival held at UWA Claremont:
Maddie Brown, (Year 6)
Erin Weightman, (Year 9)
Beth Whitewood, (Year 9)
Kathleen Elliott, (Year 9)
Nina Throsby, (Year 10)
Olivia Barns, (Year 10)
Harriet Roberts, (Year 12)
Georgina Pearce, (Year 12)

Partnering for Their Future
Thank you to those who have so generously contributed to the Partnering for their Future campaign in 2008. The MLC Foundation have been encouraged by raising more than $35,000 in 2009 to date, which represents a significant contribution towards the building of the Health and Sports Centre. Since the inception of the Partnering for their Future campaign in June 2008, we have received over $75,000 in donations.
MLC is swiftly progressing with the Health and Sports Centre with the building going out to tender in August. We look forward to inviting our community to the ‘turning of the soil’ celebration in the coming months.

School Uniforms sold on consignment
Those parents who chose to sell their daughter’s uniform to the Uniform Shop on consignment and have had their item/s sold were sent a letter in June. These parents were offered the opportunity to support the current fundraising campaign by gifting the value of the second-hand clothes to Partnering for their Future.
Thank you to those parents who chose this option, your gift has made a difference. However, if you have not yet responded to the letter and would still wish to claim your funds rather than supporting the current fundraising campaign, please email chamelin@mlc.wa.edu.au to arrange payment.
If we have not received a response from you by the end of Term 3, funds raised by selling your daughter’s uniform will be donated to the College on your behalf and a receipt issued.

If you would like to be part of this service please contact Mrs Motherway on 0448 448 146 or email her at rmotherw@bigpond.net.au

Interschool Athletics Squad
On Friday 24 July, the Interhouse Athletics Carnival was held at the new State Athletics Stadium at AK Reserve. Methodist Ladies’ College was one of the first schools in Western Australia to use the new Stadium, marking a significant shift in Athletics in Western Australia.
Following the carnival, an Interschool Athletics squad was selected to begin training for the IGSSA Athletics Carnival to be held on 15 September. These girls will receive a congratulatory letter in the mail outlining their commitment to the MLC Athletics team. In addition, students will receive an Athletics Information Booklet outlining all training and competition dates.
We encourage as many girls as possible to participate in the planned training sessions as they provide an excellent opportunity for your daughter to improve in that discipline. With eight weeks until the IGSSA carnival, even girls that are not part of the official squad have the opportunity to make the team. Yes, all training sessions are open to all girls.
We look forward to your encouragement and support of your daughter’s commitment to the MLC Athletics Team. The Great Knit
The Great Knit was a fantastic activity which helped Middle School girls learn to knit while providing a simple way of helping others and coming together for a social activity.
The Great Knit went throughout Term 2 with students, staff and family knitting squares in a variety of colours. At the end of the Term, over 400 completed squares were taken to Government House where volunteers sewed the squares together to make blankets for Anglicare who distribute them to people in need of warmth and comfort.

From the Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School
Welcome back to Term 3! While the wintry weather has made for a wet first week, we are anticipating the transition to spring as we complete the finishing touches to our performances of the College Production Alice in Wonderland, which culminates in Week 3, on 6, 7 and 8 August.
Our travelling groups have returned with exciting stories of their experiences and we look forward to the girls sharing the highlights at upcoming assemblies. Our deepest gratitude goes to the teachers and parents who made these journeys safe, loads of fun and full of experiences of which lifelong special memories are made! We welcome back the rowers who travelled to Europe over the break. All rowers are now are focussed on their final preparations for the Head of the River Regatta, at the end of Week 4, on 15 August. Please note this event is being held at the new venue at Champion Lakes. We would love to see as many supporters as possible at Champion Lakes.
As a College, we are supporting Lifeline on 31 July by holding Stress Down Day. The students are encouraged to wear the College tracksuit to school that day and staff will be wearing their own slippers (and professional dress!), or staff may purchase Stress Down Slippers from Lifeline. Other activities have been organised by the SRC and the representatives will collect a gold coin donation during Tutorial on Friday morning.
Our next Senior School Assembly will be held in Hadley Hall on Thursday 6 August at 11.45am. Parents are always welcome to join us!

Writing Skills course
During the first week of the July holidays, ten Year 11 and 12 students travelled to Notre Dame University every morning to participate in a writing skills course run by Carol Goldsmith, a lecturer in Literacy and Academic Writing.
These girls deserve to be commended for their commitment to their studies and, in particular, to improving their writing skills – giving up holiday time after a busy term is not easy! The College would also like to acknowledge the parents who supported these girls by allowing them to participate in the course.
