K-12

From the Principal

Creativity flourishes at MLC

Dr Ken Robinson has stimulated broader discussion amongst educators and school communities about the importance of nurturing creativity in schools. Developing creative individuals includes not only the processes and products of participation in the creative arts, but also the concept of agile thinking. As the capacity for critical and creative thinking is increasingly valued at all levels in our lives, MLC teachers are proud of the way their programs across K to 12 open up opportunities, in different contexts, for girls to explore and experiment with creative thinking and activities. What must go hand in hand with growing girls’ courage to operate creatively and confidently is an environment that accepts mistakes and failures as integral to learning processes. I am impressed by the way our girls support each other in these situations, as evidenced at the recent Arts Week Talent Quest which was superbly organised and hugely successful for all performers.

Over the past three weeks I have witnessed fabulous artworks on display at the Junior School’s My Learning Community Day, and saw how visiting artists have inspired quirky ceramic bowls in the Year 4 classrooms. I enjoyed time in the Kindergarten class, where each girl presented her innovative ideas for renewal of their playground equipment. An idea for a ‘heart shaped sandpit with pink sand’ was interesting and might just become a reality!

Last night I attended the IGSSA Dance Festival, at which MLC girls performed two dances choreographed entirely by students. I congratulate all girls on this example of creativity expressed through dance; the performances demonstrated great student leadership and brilliant team work, in addition to incredible creative talents. Furthermore, Year 12 Solo Drama Performance Night, which included both scripted and original monologues, enabled our final year Drama students to explore and share their creative ideas.

A performance of Hayden’s Concerto at Senior School Assembly was a wonderful sample of the magic the audience can expect at next week’s Concerto Night. At last week’s Joondalup Festival, the MLC Chorale achieved first place in the Open Secondary Choirs over 20 voices and second place in the Choirs Open over 20 voices section. For future music performances, best wishes go to the Jazz Band which will represent MLC at the WA Schools’ Jazz Festival, and the MLC Rock Band for its piece at My Big Gig Rock Band Competition on September 16.

As a continuing classroom teacher, I am constantly reminded of the brilliant opportunities provided for, and examples shown of, critical and creative thinking by students in their regular lessons every day. This learning cannot always be transformed into public performance for others to appreciate, but it is equally valued and encouraged, nevertheless.

Yvonne Palmer, Acting Principal

Where will you be seen with Rebecca Cody?

Principal Rebecca Cody officially begins at the College on Friday 25 September. Excitement is growing in anticipation of her arrival and many families have already responded to invitations to attend Inauguration events. So, where will you be seen with Principal Cody?

To help you book dates in your diary, I've summarised the range of events on offer and ask that you RSVP to Greg Schicker on gschicker@mlc.wa.edu.au as soon as possible. The Inauguration Program of events begins with the Uniting Church Commissioning Service on Sunday 18 October at 2.30pm. This traditional service will be held in Hadley Hall and will be celebrated with music, song and worship.

All members of the College community are invited to attend the Community Cocktail Welcome on Monday 19 October, from 6.30pm in the Middle School Auditorium. This event provides an opportunity to meet with Ms Cody more informally. Following drinks, entertainment and mingling, Chair of Foundation John Goodlad will play the role of 'Rove' in the Auditorium and chat ‘on the couch’ with Ms Cody to enable participants to learn more about the Principal and experience her friendly, engaging manner. Past students, including Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, have confirmed their attendance, and we look forward to also seeing many current and past parents, students and staff at this event.

The Boarders' Sunrise Breakfast will be held in the College Dining Room on Tuesday 20 October and future MLC families will meet with Ms Cody on Wednesday 21 October at the MLC Advantage Seminar from 9.30am in Hadley Hall. The Community Support Association will host the Community Morning Tea on Thursday 22 October in the College Dining Room. The coffee will be poured from 8.45am and at 9.30am, the formal CSA meeting will begin. This is an opportunity for CSA Class and Year Representatives to share the many wonderful community activities of the year with Ms Cody.

The Inauguration Program concludes with the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools hosting welcome assemblies for the Principal. The Middle School Assembly will be held on Thursday 22 October from 11.45am and Senior School Assembly on Friday 23 October from 12.45pm. Following each of these assemblies, parents are invited to share a cup of coffee and a sandwich with Ms Cody in the College Meeting Room. On Thursday 22 October, Junior School families are invited to coffee from 1.30 to 2pm under the fig trees on the Great Court, prior to Assembly at 2pm.

If you are planning to attend any of the Inauguration Events, please book your seat today with Greg Schicker by emailing gschicker@mlc.wa.edu.au

MLC Netball Club finals
It is with great delight that I advise the community that 15 MLC Netball teams have qualified for the finals that commenced last weekend. We started the year with five teams in Year 8, and four of them are through to the semi-finals. In Year 9s to 11 at the 1pm timeslot, four teams have continued, with the Purple team moving straight through to the grand final (well done to those Year 10’s). Our top five teams are all through to this weekend, with two missing the grand final weekend by just a goal. I am hopeful the weather stays kind. Good luck to all the teams. Fixtures are located on the Bosisto Hall notice board, near the pool entrance. Thanks to all coaches and managers for getting the teams organised every week.

Barclay
Last Tuesday, we held an informal but enjoyable wind-up for our Teams in Year 3 to 6. The girls feasted on pizza and had an opportunity to collect their trophies and certificates. Thanks go to Brit Whitehead and Gayle Watson-Galbraith for their organisation of this event.

Partnering for their Future online

You may shop or bank online. Try gifting online

Online giving is growing exponentially each year with the three most common motivating factors being convenience, speed and the ability to react quickly to a call for action. Our community has generously gifted to Partnering for their Future, with MLC receiving significant financial support this year from more than 100 donors during this time of great need and opportunity. Eighteen per cent of these donations have been gifted using online technology.

Help build the best resources and facilities to ensure our girls can ‘strive for the highest’ by giving a tax deductible gift to Partnering for their Future Building, Scholarship or Library and Technology funds. Gift online  It is easier than writing a cheque!

Did you know the most common day to gift online is Tuesday!

Congratulations

Congratulations to students, staff and families who participated in the City to Surf, particularly Community and Publications Coordinator Greg Schicker who completed his first marathon and Mathematics teacher Romaine Saunders who completed her first half marathon.

Georgia Saunders (Year 7) was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ for her entry in The West Australian newspaper’s Young Travel Writer's Competition.

Support Toybox charity

MLC families are offered a special invitation to subscribe to Australia's most entertaining luxury lifestyle magazine, Box Magazine, which is a major supporter of ToyBox International, a charitable trust that raises funds for special needs children around Australia.

Box Magazine supports ToyBox with a unique fundraising model where all profits from magazine subscription sales go directly to filling grants helping Australia’s sick and disadvantaged children.

IGSSA Athletics

This year the IGSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival will be held at the new Athletics Stadium in Stephenson Avenue, Mt Claremont. Our numbers have been restricted and we have elected to only take Year 7 and Year 8 students as spectators.

The students will have three choices on accessing the stadium.
1. Parent Transport – Drop off 8:15am–2pm pick up.
2. College Bus – 7:45am–3:30pm – supervised at school until 3.30pm
3. Walking-Arrive - 8:15am–Leave 2pm

Students who opt to walk to and from the venue must check their name off with a supervising teaching before they can be dismissed. Students walking must enter and exit the area via the Challenge Stadium entrance onto Stephenson Avenue. They must not walk through the bush.

Parents wishing to drop off and pick up their daughters must do so at Challenge Stadium. Parents will not be able to turn left at the main roundabout and drive to the stadium. If staying to watch, parents must park at Challenge Stadium and walk to the Athletics Stadium. Schools will have buses parked nearby to transport their spectators and competitors, which will add to the congestion.

Food All girls attending the Carnival will need to take their lunch, morning tea and drinks. The kiosk and vending machines will not be available to students.

Uniform The normal winter school uniform is to be worn. This includes the blazer (not the cardigan).

Sun Protection It may be warm, so students should also take sunscreen, sunglasses and their sports cap. The cap should be taken in their sports bag with their lunch and not worn to and from the venue. The grandstand faces into the afternoon sun, so protection from the sun will be essential.

Personal Items Valuables, including ipods, should NOT be taken as their safety cannot be guaranteed. Magazines are not appropriate for the Carnival. Mobile phones should be turned off and kept on their person at all times, not left unattended in bags.

Parents Spectators Parents who choose to come as spectators will not be seated in the stand, but on the grass on the opposite side of the track. They will be under shade sails but will have no seats. Rugs or low folder chairs may be advisable.
