From the Principal
Our 2009 Scholar in Residence
, Sheree Marris, has captivated students and staff with her stories about the secret lives of some of the most fascinating and ‘tricky’ characters inhabiting our oceans. Sheree has shared her passion for environmental sustainability and her commitment to inspiring young people to make a difference in this domain. She also shared insights into her own career pathway and reflected on the triggers that set her on a journey to help others to know, appreciate and sustain what lies beneath the waves.
We will follow with interest, the projects Sheree has helped the girls generate this week, including the ‘Waterfront Engagement’ projects under construction by Year 9 Environmental Studies students.
We thank Bruce Wilkins for his outstanding organisation of the 2009 Scholar Program and the MLC Parents’ Association for its generous sponsorship for the Program.
Outstanding Music results
Over recent weekends, our Music students and teachers have represented MLC with distinction at the WA Schools’ Orchestra and Band Festivals. The outstanding results are outlined in the Music News piece following. More than 150 MLC students represented the College, accompanied by five Music staff
Additionally, Per Ardua Association Musicale was a wonderful program of performances by the Combined Barclay Choir, Philharmonic Orchestra, Jazz band, Chorale, Barbershop and Senior Symphony Orchestra.
Congratulations to all students and staff involved.
Head of the River success
The final regatta of the rowing season was a thrilling finale for the College, with MLC’s first eight bringing home the Head of the River title. With a relatively small number of rowers, MLC’s overall results for both that regatta and the season were most impressive and augur well for the future of MLC Rowing! Our thanks go to Sally Newmarch, John Callie, Amanda Robertson and all staff who supported MLC Rowing throughout the season. Congratulations also to the girls who represented the College so well throughout the season and continued to strive for their very best until their final races.
Once again, the Rowing Support Group set no limits on the extent to which its members were prepared to go to bring out the best in our rowers and we acknowledge the central role they play in supporting the achievements of our crews.
At mid-term break we farewell Samantha England (Science Department) and Jo Halliday (Junior School) as they begin maternity leave.
Yvonne Palmer, Acting Principal
Rowers victorious
After two articles in The West Australian and one in The Sunday Times, I am sure you are aware of the outstanding success the MLC Rowing Club had on Saturday at the purpose-built rowing centre, Champion Lakes.
MLC finished second overall, and made a statement in the blue ribbon event, the Head of the River, winning the first eight by 14 seconds and establishing themselves as the fastest schoolgirl crew in Western Australia.
Our Year 9 and 10 crews won seven pennants between them, and six of these crews remained undefeated throughout the 2009 season.
On behalf of the College, I would like to congratulate the MLC rowers of 2009 on their achievements. I would also like to thank the coaching team led by Head Coach John Callie, and the Rowing Support Group for making the season so successful.

College production
What a fantastic show! Bravo to all the incredible Junior, Middle and Senior School students, staff and parents who helped create the beautiful Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The audiences all thoroughly enjoyed the exciting performances, the lovely singing and dancing, the amazing set and totally awe inspiring costumes. You all outdid yourselves this year! Thank you to everyone who supported the production in any way, either by being involved or by attending and enjoying the show.
Middle School production
Auditions for the Middle School Production were held two days after the College Production and we started rehearsing on Monday 17 August! There are four half hour plays with at least 20 Middle School girls in each cast. The plays are directed by former MLC Drama students and Theatre Arts staff, Emma Louise Rough. The girls will be rehearsing hard throughout the rest of the Term and we look forward to seeing their work in Term 4 Week 2 for a fantastic one-night only performance.
Dance Night
Next week, the annual Dance Night performance will be held in Hadley Hal on Thursday 27 August from 7pm. This is an inspiring and creative night of Dance in which every girl who takes Dance as a subject will be performing in her class item. The theme this year is Reflections, which encompasses stories from the students' pasts, or looks back at the history of where we all came from, such as the journey of Australia from settlement to today.
Come along and enjoy toe-tapping pieces based on space age robots and Barbie Girl, as well as contemporary dances. Dance Night is a wonderful evening with up to 300 girls performing throughout the evening.
Tickets can be purchased every lunchtime from Gertrude Walton or at the door on the night for the bargain price of just $5. This year, there will be an interval during which the school’s co-curricular Amnesty group will be selling refreshments in the Café and foyer to raise money for Amnesty causes.

Progress report on the Health and Sports Centre
Council is aware of keen interest in the MLC community regarding progress towards the building of the Health and Sports Centre. At this stage, we are awaiting the outcome of the tendering process (expected in a few weeks) and we are busily engaged in securing finance for the Centre, to supplement the once-in-a-lifetime grant of $2.5 million from the Commonwealth Government.
Support of the Partnering for their Future campaign is quite fundamental to our model of financial support for the building of the Centre and I would like to register Council’s sincere appreciation of this.
In addition, we are looking carefully at the College’s whole portfolio of non-core assets and working through a process of identifying the best use of monies available through those assets. As a result of this process, we have made a decision to list one of the College’s properties in Corry Lynn Road, so you will shortly see a ‘For Sale’ sign on that property. I will ensure that you are kept informed of progress as it occurs.
Emeritus Professor Lesley Parker, Chair of Council

ISSSA Athletics carnival spectators
The IGSSA Athletics Carnival is scheduled for Week 9 this on Tuesda, 15 September. It will be held at the State Athletics Stadium on Stephenson Avenue in Mt Claremont, the same venue at which MLC held its Interhouse Athletics carnival.
We are greatly restricted in the number of spectators we can take, so only Year 7 and 8 girls will attend as spectators.
Spectators can be dropped off and picked up by parents, or they can catch a bus which will drop off and then bring girls back to MLC after the event. A note will be sent home closer to the event, advising parents of all necessary details.

The College’s co-curricular program is in high profile at present:
The talents of MLC Dance students will be showcased at both the MLC Dance Night on Thursday 27 August in Hadley Hall and then again on Thursday 3 September at the IGSSA Dance Festival being held at Penrhos College.
Over the past two weekends, our Music staff have exercised their great gifts and generously shared their time and passion to present our music students at the WA Schools' Orchestra Festival and the WA School's Band Festival. More than 150 girls and five staff were involved and we congratulate, celebrate and thank all those involved.
Congratulations also go to all involved in the success of the Rowing squad this year, particularly Coordinator of Sport/Rowing Sally Newmarch, assistant coordinator of Rowing Amanda Robertson, Head Coach John Callie, Captain of Boats Renee Strong and Vice Captain of Boats Rebecca Weall on an outstanding culmination to the 2009 Rowing Season at the Head of the River Regatta. Team spirit was fantastic and the girls gave 110 per cent, physically and mentally! It is impressive to observe the personal growth and development that accompanies girls’ involvement during the season. Equally impressive are the strong bonds established between our rowing parents who have shared the rigours of the season. We thank them warmly for their generosity and acknowledge all girls who put in their best performances.
About 20 Year 11 girls and Year 11 boys from Scotch College boys have completed training walks and are finalising their mental preparations for the challenge of the 50 Mile Walk at Dwellingup this long weekend. Staff including Head of Year 11 Michelle Rudrum, Kimberly McKerras, Burgess Orton, Dr Angela Keam and Anne Ashby have accompanied the girls on their training walks. With the help of additional staff to provide encouragement and practical support, the group is expected make its way to Scotch College’s Moray campsite late on Saturday night, after an arduous but uplifting 18 hours. This is a remarkable personal challenge and our best wishes go to the 50 mile walkers.
